The Gallery
The Guenzel Gallery is at the heart of PenArt. It is the first space visitors encounter from the main entrance and the hub from which each wing of the school extends. It is a place for students and community members to connect and experience world-class contemporary art. Inspired by the historic round barns of the area, the gallery is a light-filled, ten-sided space with two levels of clerestory windows. Hand-hewn pine logs rise twenty-four feet to support a radial, tongue and groove, red cedar ceiling topped by a cupola. At the ground level, the gallery walls are backed with plywood to support heavy works of art. A limited number of pedestals with acrylic vitrines are available for sculpture, but no more than twenty-five percent of the floor space can be obstructed.
Find specifications, available equipment, images, a floor plan, and 3D models here. Depending on the scale of your exhibition, the gallery will be shared with one to two other artists. Email any questions related to the space or installation capabilities to exhibit@peninsulaschoolofart.org.
The Spotlight Exhibition Series
Through the Spotlight Exhibition Series, we intend to provide career development and experience for visual artists and to share high-quality, concept-driven exhibitions with the Door County community. Instead of the thematic group exhibitions normally presented in the Guenzel Gallery, the Spotlight Series will feature concurrent solo exhibitions by two or three artists, each showing a complete body of work in the Guenzel Gallery. PenArt invites proposals for exhibitions in late March through late May of 2025 and 2026.
Artists may submit their proposals through Slideroom for a $35 fee to help support the program. Successful proposals consider our unique space and engage our audience visually and conceptually. Staff will review proposals and select artists whose work complements each other.
Selected artists will be responsible for the transportation of their work to and from PenArt. Installation will be limited to a four-day period between the hours of 9am and 5pm. Selected artists will be given a private bedroom in a shared resident/faculty house during installation. They will also receive a $1000 honorarium to use as they see fit.
